Homeschooled kids take day out

A stack of students who learn from home got to make new friends and learn some new sports’ skills while their parents shared ideas on homeschooling last week.

Friday’s sports afternoon at Saxton Stadium was a first gathering of its kind for the region’s homeschooled students.

Organiser Tori Puklowski, who homeschools her four children in Hira, said most homeschooled children belong to organised sports clubs. But they rarely managed to get together with other homeschoolers. “If we can all pitch in together we can have some great events. Combined athletics and swimming sports are the main events the kids miss out on.”

The children split into three groups for the afternoon’s sports, which focussed mainly on learning ball skills. “And it was terrific for the parents to get together and discuss ideas,” Tori said.

The Saxton Field complex worked well for the group.  Tori said she hopes to hold similar gatherings at least twice a year in the future.  About 300 children are homeschooled across the region.  The three main groups for home-educating families in the Nelson region are Nelson Christian Home Educators, Tasman Home Educators and the Natural Learning Group based in Motueka.

Any parent considering home education for their child is welcome to contact a homeschool group for advice and support from others experienced in this lifestyle.
